Dear Tony, Happiness Delivered :)

I tend to have this horrible habit of reading the first few chapters of a book and then getting side-tracked with other things… I must have 4 or 5 half-read books on my shelf at the moment. This is not due to lack of interest but rather a lack of time (or so I always told myself)… or perhaps my impatience. I typically have this impulse to start reading the new book I come across instead of first finishing the previous one.

A few weeks ago at the office, a co-worker (@Tyler_Starrine) told me about this amazing book she had just finished reading called, “Delivering Happiness – A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose” and told me I had to read it. The next day, she brought it into the office for me to borrow. Since it was a borrowed book (and since it had gotten rave reviews), I decided it was a good enough excuse to temporarily retire my current selection, “Blink” and start reading this book by Zappos‘ CEO, Tony Hsieh.

I managed to squeeze some time into my busy schedule by skipping my usual treadmill workout at the gym and opting for a more multi-tasking friendly piece of equipment… the Stair Master! Without realizing I had been climbing stairs for over an hour (90 mins), I found myself nearly halfway through the book and not wanting to put it down. I can honestly say that I’ve never been so immersed in a book before. There was just something so truly inspiring about Tony’s authentic voice, incredible experiences, perseverance and  faith to find his true passion in business… and in life.

Facebook… The Social Network

It’s hard to imagine life without Facebook (or Twitter for that matter)… even my career revolves around these Social Networks! It’s funny to think back to my Freshman year at Syracuse University in 2004… My school was one of the first invited to join Facebook. I can still remember sitting in my dorm room (Boland Hall) when one of my neighbors asked me if I had signed up for this “Facebook thing” yet. Intrigued, I created an account and completed my profile… the rest is history!

If you haven’t already seen The Social Network (aka The Facebook movie), you’ve definitely got to check it out! It was far more than just a story about how Facebook came to be; it was an inspiring story of entrepreneurship and a brilliantly smart Harvard student. Although the real Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, refuses to support or see the film, Jessie Eisenberg portrays Mark in an admirable light.

Here’s a little snippet of the dialogue from one of my favorite scenes:

Facebook Lawyer: Do you think I deserve your full attention?
Mark Zuckerberg: I had to swear an oath before we began this deposition, and I don’t want to purjure myself, so I have a legal obligation to say no.
Facebook Lawyer: Okay – no. You don’t think I deserve your attention.
Mark Zuckerberg: I think if your clients want to sit on my shoulders and call themselves tall, they have the right to give it a try – but there’s no requirement that I enjoy sitting here listening to people lie. You have part of my attention – you have the minimum amount. The rest of my attention is back at the offices of Facebook, where my colleagues and I are doing things that no one in this room, including and especially your clients, are intellectually or creatively capable of doing.
Mark Zuckerberg: Did I adequately answer your condescending question?

Despite facing legal and personal battles, Mark never loses sight of his vision and the movie depicts both the successes and inevitable obstacles faced en route to becoming the youngest billionaire.

Here’s a great review from Mashable (FYI: it contains spoilers): “The Social Network”: Mashable’s Complete Movie Review

Laughs in LA: Daniel Tosh

“I couldn’t live here, I love seasons too much.” “Me too, that’s why I live in a place that skips all the shitty ones!”Daniel Tosh

For those of you who live in Los Angeles, he pretty much hits the nail on the head with this bit. Although I do miss the seasons occasionally… nothing beats L.A.’s year-round sunshine :)

Smart, witty, and charming are just a few words I would associate with Mr. Daniel Tosh. Oh and obviously, handsome… with his deep-v necks t-shirts and striped cardigans ;) No but really, who wouldn’t be in love with this guy?

It was love at first laugh when I caught his “Completely Serious” special and now I can’t get enough of his Comedy Central (#1!!!) show, Tosh.0 <3 It’s sort of like a modern-day spin on America’s Funniest Home Videos with the personality of The Soup combined with a little bit of SNL. Daniel snags the best/worst of YouTube videos and challenges infamous YouTubers like David After the Dentist and the Hoodrat Kid to “Web Redemptions.” In addition, he live tweets during his show and isn’t afraid to embrace social media to connect with his fans… Read the rest of this entry »
