Talk about the power of Twitter, this one tweet from @Lifesapet led me to save the life of an amazing kitten who was scheduled to be euthanized June 3rd. I wasn’t even searching for a new kitten, I just happened to search the hashtag, #LA on Twitter and came across this tweet. It broke my heart to look at this face and know that he was scheduled for death row:
I immediately emailed Cyndi from Life’s A Pet to tell her that I was interested in adopting this cutie. I was relieved to find out that I’d contacted her in time and that they were going to pull him out of the shelter that planned to kill him. She transported him to an animal hospital near LAX where he got treated for his Upper Respiratory Infection. Even though I wanted to bring him home right away, I had to wait a few days until he was feeling better.
I finally got to bring this little guy home on Saturday, June 12th and named him, Payton. I instantly fell in love with my new cuddly and loving kitten. After sitting in a small cage for over a month, Payton was just so happy to have any sort of affection. Since he had been diagnosed with an URI, I had to make sure I kept him in a separate room away from my other kitty, Paisley (who I rescued from another shelter in Santa Monica last January). Beyond the sniffles and wheezing, I noticed his inner ears were completely black… from what I knew, this had to be ear mites! I scheduled a vet appointment right away to get him fully checked out.
Ear mites, it was… and a pretty severe case at that but nothing a little medicine couldn’t fix. It’s so sad to see that the animals set to be euthanized are essentially neglected and not treated for their sickness. Now he’s almost all back to full health and happy to have a loving home.
It’s a sad reality that they are so many animals in need of loving homes and I was happy to bring my new kitten, Payton home <3. If you have space in your home and heart, adopt a pet from one of the local shelters!
